McNichols Sports Arena

1635 Bryant St.

McNichols Sports Arena was located in Downtown Denver. It was completed in 1975 and cost $16 million. In the renovation in 1986, more seats were added to fit over 17,000 people. The arena was named after the mayor William H. McNichols jr. The arena was demolished in 2000 due to the sports teams moving to play at the Pepsi Center.

John Denver at McNichols Arena

This concert was most likely one of John Denver's favorite places to perform because it was in his home town of Colorado. He always came back to play at arena's around Colorado. He played at the McNichols Sports Arena two times in his career. On July 2, 1976, John Denver played for his state with a long set list. He played eighteen songs and two encores. There was a special vibe here because most of his songs were about Colorado and how much it felt like home to him.   -written by Kathryn Gaskin
