Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald (1917 – 1996) was born in Virginia and began singing in 1934 after competing in an Amateur Night competition at the Apollo Theater in New York.

Ella Fitzgerald visited and performed at the Sir John Hotel

Ella Fitzgerald  and many other singers and musicians performed and stayed at the Sir John Hotel in Miami. Segregation laws prohibited black people from staying at hotels in Miami Beach, and the Sir John along with other places in Overtown and Brownsville became hubs for black celebrities and visitors. The Sir John hotel was originally built as the Lord Calvert Hotel in 1951. It is no longer standing today.
