Federico Medina

Federico Medina is a native Santa Ana photographer. Trained in graphic design, he discovered his true passion in 2015 through his Canon 5D model camera. Medina is a self-taught photographer, and utilized YouTube to learn how to properly use his new camera.  In 2014, he created a mural for the Santa Ana City Council’s utility box art project, using a collage of photographs. In 2017, Medina’s work was displayed at an exhibition at the Bowers Museum. His other photography projects include capturing the Masjid Al Hedayah Mosque and Muslim residents of Santa Ana, in order to tell the wider, diverse stories of Santa Ana.

We Are Santa Ana

We Are Santa Ana features a unique artistic medium compared to other utility box or wall murals, as it was created with photography and digital editing rather than paints and brushes. Featuring photographs of various residents of Santa Ana side by side, especially Latino and white residents, We Are Santa Ana speaks a message of unity and community in the wake of a divisive tragedy. However, unlike other local murals, this project does not directly address the tragedy that inspired it, but instead creates an image representing a harmonious, united future. Sources: 1.
